Opening Day Roundup from Clemson

By Craig Jackson - June 03, 2006

Day 1 of the Clemson Regional is in the books, but only one game was played. 2 seed Elon got by 3 seed Mississippi State 5-4 in a very close game. You might have thought the heat and humidty would have played a role with the pitchers for both squads, but both went deep into the game and pitched well. Elon now goes to the winners bracket game, and MSU goes to the losers bracket game, and that is where the original plan ends.

Since the rains came and washed away (actually caused the suspension of) the game between top seed CLemson and numbe 4 seed UNC Ashville, the tournament schedule has changed. And the winners are MSU and Elon. Starting at 11 EDT Saturday, UNC Ashville and Clemson resume the game from tonight. By 11 the heat and humidity should start rising. Oh by the way, for that 11 AM game, pregame drills will begin around 9 AM, meaning pregame meals will be around 6 or 7 AM. So wakeup calls and pregame medical treatment will probably begin about 5. Fun fun fun. So you were at the stadium till 10 or so, then bussed back and grabbed dinner, then off to bed by probably 11:30 or midnight. Long day, short night.

Here is where it gets interesting. The loser of this game, turns right around and plays Mississippi State at 3 PM. Maybe an hour to rest, get treatment, grab a quick snack, and prepare for their opponent, which probably slept in. Add to that, the fact that the 3 PM game is an elimination game, and it gets a bit tougher.

Of course the winner gets maybe a 4 hour break to take a nap, eat, prep for Elon, get back to the stadium, and get ready to play. And all the while, Elon is probably back at the hotel prepping like a normal gameday. Fortunately, there is little chance of rain Saturday, so SUnday should be back to normal.

Couple of notes of interest.....two Bulldogs extended hitting streaks in the loss to Elon. Thomas Berkery ran his third hitting streak of the season to 15 games, and Brian LaNinfa extended his hit streak to 12 games.

Day 2 plans to be a long and tiresome day, but rest assured some good and fun baseball will be played, more tailgating will take place, and more blogging from me.
