Oxford: Gil to Start for Canes

By Doug Kroll - June 11, 2006

In their biggest game of the year, it will be righty junior Danny Gil making his fourth start of his career, 2nd in two weeks. Gil was thrusted into the starting rotation away from his setup role in the bullpen, after a season ending injury to Carlos Gutierrez, and he did his job last week, getting into the sixth inning against San Francisco.

He went 5.1 innings giving up 3 hits, 2 runs (0ER), while walking three and striking out four. On the season, Gil comes in with a 3-2 record and a 3.11 ERA. He is 2-1 in his three career starts, all coming this season for Miami. He defeated UCLA earlier this year in LA, and lost to Winthrop at home while only giving up two runs in four innings.

It's interesting to see Miami go with the righty which means if Miami can win tonight, lefty manny Miguelez will be on the hill tomorrow. But first things first, Gil will be asked to get them into the sixth again, and leave it up to the big man in the bullpen, Chris Perez. Perez, Miami's closer drafted in the supplemental first round this past week by St. Louis, did not pitch last night, and has the capability of going 3 innings when asked. If the Hurricanes have the lead going to the 7th, look for the hard throwing righty to trot onto the field.

I came by the field around 11am, and fans were already lining up with their bbq's and tents and getting ready for gametime, which still sat over 7 hours away. They're dying for a trip to Omaha, and after last season's two game meltdown to Texas, they are hungrier than ever. Enjoy the game and i'm sure Chris will provide an Ole Miss pitching preview, after all i've seen Miami all year and he's seen the Rebels, it's a good combo we have going here in Oxford!
