Oxford: Quotes and notes

By Chris Kieffer - June 10, 2006

Ole Miss' Zack Coart went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs after collecting just one hit last weekend. C.J. Ketcum and Mark Wright each drove in three runs for Ole Miss and Yonder Alonso drove in three for Miami.
Below are quotes from Oxford Super Regional.

Miami coach Jim Morrison:
It’s very disappointing to be 9-3 in the fifth inning. You want to win and you expect to win and you got to win.

Miami catcher Eddy Rodriguez on Ole Miss six-run fifth
"At that time, the game was still tied. To their credit, they came back, but it really doesn’t matter. At that time, it was 0-0. We just didn’t come back in the next inning and put some runs on the board. I feel like if we would have put some runs on the board, we would have gotten our momentum back, but they stopped us and they got a couple of runs. The biggest thing was that the next inning they came back and scored a couple of runs and that got them going."

Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso
"We’re the type of team (that can bounce back). We’re young and we have 15 new palyers, but we have a big heart and I feel that we’ll be ready for tomorrow."

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco
"This is an unbelievable game. It was just a war out there. Thankfully we were on the right side of it. I’m really proud of the guys, to be down 9-3 early against a really good Miami team and to hang in there. It’s tough sometimes this time of year when it doesn’t look that good and you still have another left day in you. They didn’t take that attitude."

Ole Miss pitcher Craig Rodriguez
"When coach came to the mound, he told me, we need you to put up a couple of zeroes for a couple of innings. I didn’t get to play last weekend, but we did intra-squad on Tuesday, and I got to throw in that. That helped out more than anything, more than throwing a pen."

Mark Wright
On home run
"I really wasn't looking to hit a home run. When it got to 2-2, I was just looking for a fastball. I really wasn’t trying to hit it out the park, I just got the barrel on it. The ball was flying a little bit tonight and I was able to get it out."

Recharge your batteries, guys! We need to win Sunday and I know you can do it! Go get'em Yonder, Jemile, Roger, Danny V., Eddy, Tommy, Blake, Jon, Andrew, Chris Perez., Richard, Danny G., Ricky, Scott, Jon, Richard, Marcelo, Jason and all of you. I send you e-brownies full of good luck. Rub those green stones for energy and do your best. That's all anybody can ask!!

What a great college baseball atmosphere tonight in Oxford. When I arrived the Rebels were down 9-3 and needless to say there were some fans ready to throw in the towel but not the case for the young men in the Ole Miss dugout. I've watched them all season and for a team that is rebuilding, my question is this, what will they be like when they get the house built? As for Miami, even though they have their backs to the wall, don't count them out. Great fan support for Ole Miss tonight as well and that helps no matter what park you are playing in. Can't wait to see what happens in game 2.
