Pac-10: A rematch of Rivals

By Lindsay Schnell - June 10, 2006

Just drove by the ballpark for the first time today. The OSU grounds crew (who has had quite a bit of work these last few weeks with both baseball and softball playing postseason games at home) was hard at work making sure the mound was perfect. I'm not joking -- there were four people on the mound clearly in deep conversation about how to make sure everything was JUST right.

Weather so far is okay -- let's hope we don't have to deal with rain, as the softball team did two weeks ago when it hosted a Super Regional.

Speaking of the softball team, the Beavers also had to play against a Pac-10 school in Cal for a trip to the World Series. What is up with the NCAA making teams from the same conference have to play each other in the postseason?

When the baseball clubs met earlier this year the Beavers dominated in every aspect, outscoring the Cardinal a total of 16-1. But Stanford is a different ballclub now -- the Cardinal has recorded double-digit hits in 11 of its last 13 games and scored seven or more runs in eight of its last 12 games. Oh yeah, and to get to the Super Regional they had to beat defending champion Texas. In Austin.

OSU coach Pat Casey said he was "not shocked Stanford won." He went on to say the Cardinal have been playing great ball lately and that the pitching has only improved. (Stanford's top ace, Greg Reynolds, just went No. 2 in this week's MLB draft.)

OSU won't be short on talent though, especially with the way second baseman Chris Kunda is playing. Kunda, the 2006 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, was the Most Outstanding player last week in the Regional after hitting two home runs, one double and seven RBIs. Outfielder Cole Gillespie, the 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year, has a 14-game hitting streak running also. Now it's just a matter of hitting off Reynolds...

Should be a heck of a match up. Countdown is T-minus 7 hours and 27 minutes...
