Rain Rain Go Away

By Craig Jackson - June 02, 2006

Well, you knew it had to happen. Rain at Clemson. IT threatened to rain before the MSU-Elon game, only to stay sunny and muggy. After exiting the stadium to the rightfield tailgate area bewteen games, the skies grew dark and windy. Of course the BBQ was hot and spicy, so folks overlooked it. Quick glances toward the stadium showed ORange clad fans filling up every nook and cranny available to them. Knowing I possessed the ever valuable media pass, I again hesitated going in, even during the team introductions. Then came the announcement. Due to weather in the area, they were tarping the field.

Rather than going in to see what officially was going on, I started dodging rain and high winds and hail that came out of the dakr skies and pounded the area. Oh yeah. Forgot to tell you they had issued a Sever Thunderstorm Warning for the area until 8 PM local time.

So as I hunkered down in my SUV to ride out the delay, I thought about the events of the day to that point. A pumped Elon team coming out and playing like a number 1 seed. 2 staff aces going deep into the game while dueling to a 4-4 tie. Defenders sacrificing themselves to do whatever it took to make a play. Not bad stuff for a first round game of a regional.

I looked out the window, and the rain had let up a bit, so I ventured into the stands. Wrong thing to do. Hot, wet and tired baseball fans were everywhere. THe lucky few, who had reserved passes under the roof, or media passes, were all over the terrace area. As I sit here in the press box, it feels more like a night in the tropics than a night for baseball.

The grounds crew has squeegeed off most of the water in the outfield, and have now left. Looking at tthe radar, rain appears likely for the forseeable future. Someone in the press box came through saying if they did not start by 10 PM, the game would be banged for the night and played tomorrow. No idea how that would affect the schedule. Only question left now is what will the weather be like to morrow.
