Tuscaloosa: Behind the Scenes

By Mark Etheridge - June 09, 2006

Here's some inside info on what some are calling the marquee series of the weekend.

Friday night at 6 p.m CT

Two great lefties take the hill. Sources say UNC's Andrew Miller has trouble consistently throwing his fastball for arm-side strikes. Arm-side strikes would be inside corner for lefties and outside corner for righties. If his slider is on, lefties will be bailing out. Miller is so long that that the slider starts behind the lefthanded hitter and breaks over the plate - or at least the batter is hoping it breaks. It is a big-league pitch.

Alabama's Wade LeBlanc comes right at you. He'll throw changeups for strikes but prefers to put them down in the zone and have you chase them. To lefthanded hitters, he will throw a few curveballs although that is his third pitch. His change is his best pitch and he rarely throws it to lefties. He will throw his fastball up in the zone successfully - which is sort of surprising since he pitches around 85-89.

Places to visit this weekend in Tuscaloosa

Dreamland Ribs is nationally-known. That's a must. Downtown has several restaurants that will be open after the game. I recommend Mellow Mushroom and Jalapenos. Those looking for nightlife can visit the strip and hang with the college kids - although the Houndstooth (great name for a bar) - has clientele of all ages. There are restaurants on the strip too. Football fans will get a kick out of the Bryant Museum, across Bryant Drive from the baseball park.
