Bruins at Canes...the preview

By Adam Aizer - February 09, 2007

Not such a great start to the night. Let me explain...

Mark Light Field, the home of the Miami Hurricanes, is not exactly one of those new, gorgeous, ground-breaking stadiums. It is a great ballpark to see a game at, with respectful and knowledgeable fans, the best milkshakes you'll ever have, and of course, good talent on the field.

But it does have its problems. Tonight it was the wireless internet. There was some sort of issue that was out of our hands, and to make a long story short, we didn't have internet access until long after the first pitch.

So I wrote this fancy game preview, hoping you'd be able to read all about UCLA and Miami before UM pitcher Scott Maine started tossing. Better late than never. Here you go (No hard feelings Mark Light Field. I still love you):

#23 UCLA Bruins (2-1):
- Coach: John Savage is in his third season at UCLA. This man seems to have his program on the rise after a 33-25 record last year and a good group of freshmen and transfers that he pulled in this season.

-Last Weekend: Hosted Wintrhop and took two out of three. The Bruins didn't do much hitting in the first two games, but they belted out 19 runs in the finale.

-Biggest Strength: Defense. Last season's .977 fielding percentage was impressive. The Bruins return five of the position players from that squad including catcher Ryan Babineau. More on that talented sophomore later.

-Biggest Weakness: Pitching. They lost some good arms from last year, and outside of tonight's starter, Tyson Brummett, UCLA is unproven.

-Players to Watch: Sophomore shortstop Brandon Crawford hit .318 last season with six homers. He was also UCLA's best base stealer. Babineaux wasn't much of a hitter last season (just .258), but he has exactly zero errors in 466 career chances. This defensive stud is hitting .455 through the first three games. If he keeps hitting like this, he'll be considered one of the best catchers in the country.

#5 Miami Hurricanes (0-2):
-Coach: Jim Morris enters his 13th season at UM. Morris is, without a doubt, one of the elite coaches in college baseball. His Hurricanes have been to Omaha in 10 of his 12 seasons.

-Last Weekend: Lost two games to Mercer. Sunday's game was rained out. Needless to say, everyone around here was pretty shocked.

-Biggest Strength: Team speed. Stolen bases are a staple of a Jim Morris team. In two games, UM has swiped seven bases in nine attempts. Almost everyone in the lineup can steal, especially Jemile Weeks and Blake Tekotte.

-Biggest Weakness: The bullpen lost most major contributors from last year. The closer is gone, and so far the results have been dreadful. Nine runs allowed in two games by the UM bullpen.

-Players to Watch: Sophomore second baseman Jemile Weeks is a preseason All-American. He bats leadoff, has some good pop from the right side of the plate, plays good defense, and will be one of the fastest guys on the field. Sophomore first baseman Yonder Alonso is Miami's biggest home run threat. However, he'll need the guys behind him to start hitting better or he'll see very few good pitches.

Tonight's starters: The Bruins turn to senior right handed pitcher Tyson Brummett. Coach Savage says he's happy to have this guy back this season, considering he's been drafted twice so far. Miami's ace Scott Maine, a junior, was suspended for the season opener, but he gets the ball tonight and looks to begin what could be a remarkable campaign. He's got the talent to be one of the best pitchers in the country.

Alright there's your game preview. Miami needs to jump out to an early lead and avoid putting too much pressure on the bullpen. UCLA needs to get the top of the UM order out, specifically the guys hitting in front of Alonso.
