Dell Diamond is a True Gem

San Diego leads Texas 2-0 in the middle of the 4th. Torero leadoff hitter Justin Snyder yanked a homer down the right field line to open the third inning for the game’s first run, and Sean Nicol's single just plated the second. Brian Matusz has been as advertised on the mound for USD. The tall lefty has allowed only two hits and has struck out five.

Because of renovation delays to UT’s Disch-Falk field, this weekend’s series is being played in Round Rock, a northern suburb of Austin. The Dell Diamond, home of the AAA Round Rock Express, is a wonderful facility. A few years back, Baseball America named it the top minor league facility in the country. Its best improvement over Disch-Falk? Today, I’m voting for the heated press box.

Seriously, Dell Diamond is what I wish the Disch could be renovated into – little foul territory, angled chair seating, grass berm seating lining the outfield, a home run porch…this guy describes its splendor better than I can.

The Disch’s renovation is long overdue, but Texas is doing it in a big way, of course -- $21 million of work. The renovation is going in two stages – this season, there will be new restrooms and concessions, new chair seats replacing the old bench seats, plus new bench and berm seating down the third-base line. Those damn light poles have also been moved back to provide unobstructed viewing. You can get progress pictures and more info here. Next season, new box seating, new dugouts, and luxury boxes will appear.

At some point, the horrid artificial carpet will also be upgraded – not to grass, unfortunately, but to FieldTurf. Hey, it's an improvement. Baby steps, you know?

Built in 1975, the old Disch is one of the great stadiums in college baseball, but she badly needed this facelift. I don't even mind that it's taking longer than expected. After all, those delays are why I'm warm right now.
