Eagles soaring in third

By Bob Holtzman - February 03, 2007

Winthrop got to UCLA starter Paul Schmidt and didn't waste anytime getting to his replacement, reliever Kevin Brophy.

Winthrop cleanup hitter Tommy Lentz earned an RBI on a bases-loaded walk to cut UCLA's lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning.

UCLA coach John Savage pulled starter Schmidt, who walked four batters with three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work. Brophy couldn't undo Schmidt's mess either, giving up a 2-run single to Louis Ullrich with the bases loaded and two outs. Brophy just walked Bryn Henderson to reload the bases for Winthrop. Pinch hitter Tyler McBride followed it up with an RBI single to give Winthrop a 4-2 lead and the Eagles are still going.
