Rice: All tied up again

By Jonathan Yardley - February 16, 2007

Long Beach State rallied in the eighth to tie the game 3-3, but Rice reliever Jared Gayhart got a key strikeout with the bases loaded to keep it a 3-3 game.

The back-and-forth continues between these two teams in a very dramatic game. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Jason Corder doubled into the left-field corner. After a semi-intentional walk to Danny Espinosa, Long Beach DH Steve Tinoco ripped a line drive that replacement left fielder Jordan Dodson dropped, allowing pinch runner Chris Nelson to score with the tying run. Of Long Beach State’s three runs today, only one has been earned. And, to state the obvious, this is one occasion where Rice misses injured closer Cole St.Clair.
With runners at the corners and two outs, Wayne Graham brought in Jared Gayhart, whose single gave Rice the lead, to preserve the 3-3 tie against Jason Tweedy. Gayhart issued a walk, setting up a bases-loaded, two-out confrontation with catcher Kip Masuda. After falling behind 2-0, Gayhart fired two fastballs over the inside corner to level the count at 2-2. Working from the windup, Gayhart then fanned Masuda on a high fastball to end the inning. 3-3, bottom 8.
