Into extra innings we go. Neither team produced a baserunner from the bottom of the eighth through the 10th inning. I believe this is now the longest Rice game since a 12-inning game against Baylor in February 2002 – more than five years ago.

With the crowd thinning out and the remaining faithful well bundled up, the 11th inning turned lengthy. Gayhart walked the first two hitters, and Graham called on Kyle Gunderson in relief. After two failed bunting attempts, pinch hitter A.J. Pinocchi chopped to short to advance the runners with one out. With the infield in, Gunderson got Matt Cline to ground to second, but Jess Buenger could not find the handle and only got the out at first. Steve Tinoco came across with the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the 11th, Long Beach sophomore Bryan Shaw allowed a one-out infield single to Jess Buenger and then had trouble throwing strikes from the stretch, walking Joe Savery on four pitches. With the tying run in scoring position, Shaw fell behind 3-1 on Diego Seastrunk before rallying for a strikeout and then getting Chad Lembeck to fly to right to end the game.

After almost four hours, the Dirtbags finally came out with a big win, 4-3. It was a crazy game, and I’ll be back here tomorrow to see if these teams can top themselves after a very entertaining start to the series.
