Rice: Deciding game coming up

By Jonathan Yardley - February 18, 2007

Back here at Reckling Park for the rubber match of this three-game series. As usual with these two teams, it has been all about pitching so far. Long Beach State got excellent relief pitching Friday but could not measure up to Rice starter Ryan Berry yesterday. We’ll see what happens today …

Quite a few lineup changes today – with both teams starting lefthanders (Joe Savery for Rice and Omar Arif for Long Beach State), both coaches have gone to predominantly righthanded-hitting lineups. In stark contrast to yesterday, 14 of the 18 batters in today’s game will swing from the right side against the starting pitchers.

A transfer from TCU, Arif is from Mesquite, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, but got quite an ovation from family and friends when he was announced as the starter. It’s nice to see the Horned Frogs on the other end of a four-year transfer; TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle is not the most popular guy in coaching circles due to the high number of four-year transfers in his program.
