Rice : Glare delay!

By Jonathan Yardley - February 25, 2007

If Mark thinks blowouts are bad, try having a glare delay in the middle of a blowout.

That’s right, there is a glare from the setting sun’s reflection off the Hilton hotel across the street behind the center-field fence. The Houston Medical Center provides a great visual backdrop for Reckling Park, but this is the drawback. With the catcher and batter unable to see the ball coming out of the pitcher’s hand, we will be sitting in this delay for probably 15 minutes or so. Rice is up 14-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, so it’s all rather elementary at this point.

Now we just have to figure out which musical selections to play to keep the fans happy – so far it’s been the seventh-inning stretch classic “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “YMCA.” Stay tuned!

Also, on the obscure out-of-town scoreboard, Southern Connecticut State beat Lynn University 10-9 today. That’s my pick of the litter. In men’s tennis, No. 35 Rice beat No. 16 Texas 4-3 in a third-set tiebreak at No. 1 singles, so that drew a rousing cheer from the Reckling Park crowd. The Washington State 7, Texas 6 baseball score also drew cheers.
