Rice: lineups and notes

By Jonathan Yardley - February 16, 2007

It's a gorgeous day to be inside watching outside baseball, I'm not gonna lie. I'm a Northern guy, but press passes certainly come in handy when the high temperature is in the 50s. Still, Rice and Long Beach State are ready for a 4:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Reckling Park. Both teams have gone with slightly modifield lineups for the opening game of this series.

Both coaches are big on lefty-righty matchups and have taken advantage of today's righty-righty pitching matchup to get lefthanded swingers in the lineup. For Long Beach State, Allen Woods (lf), Steve Tinoco (dh) and Kip Masuda (c) are all making their third start in the Beach's seventh game of the year (technically eight, but the stats from the Pepperdine tie don't count until the game is completed). David Weathers stacked three lefties at the top of the lineup against Rice righty Chris Kelley, and five of the nine DIrtbags will swing lefty against Kelley.
For Rice, Wayne Graham also has five lefties in the lineup, including A&M transfer Jess Buenger (2b), who is hitting third after seeing mostly pinch-hitting duty in the early going. Freshman Diego Seastrunk (3b) will make his second career start at third base, and San Jacinto transfer Jared Gayhart (dh) will get his first action at the plate batting in the No. 9 spot. The lineup leaves Jordan Dodson and Adam Zornes on the bench to provide power. Wayne Graham also threw a curve by not pairing senior catcher Travis Reagan with Kelley for the first time this season.
