Rice: Musings on a scoreless game

By Jonathan Yardley - February 17, 2007

It's a gorgeous day - even better than yesterday and definitely warmer - and we have what will probably be the biggest crowd of the weekend on hand to enjoy it.

Random notes in a scoreless game:
We've seen a number of checked swings called strikes so far, and I don't think it sat too well with Long Beach State and second baseman Matt Cline in the top of the third inning.
Rice is wearing blue jerseys today for the first time this season, while Long Beach State brought back the grays from last night. Unusually, Beach pitcher Shane Peterson has plenty of dirt on his right knee - he was thrown out at third in the top of the first inning trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt.
I had some pictures ready to post, but I can't figure out how to upload them - maybe Eric Sorenson can help me out, since he's got it down.
Finally, the wind is blowing out today, a rarity at Reckling Park. I don't know if it will produce more runs - Peterson and Berry have been dominant through two-plus innings - but it sure ought to help.
