Rice: TAMU-CC 4, FAU 0

By Jonathan Yardley - February 24, 2007

Florida Atlantic approached this tournament the way any solid mid-major should: Kevin Cooney started his ace against the highest-ranked opponent (Mickey Storey against Rice on Friday) and saved No. 2 starter Brandon Cooney (no relation) for Nebraska on Sunday. That moved No. 3 starter Mike Obradovich up to the Saturday start against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. If the first inning is any indication, the decision may turn out to bite Florida Atlantic in the butt.

Obradovich was not awful, but he did not help his own cause by fumbling a bunt after allowing a leadoff single. After a fly out and an RBI single, No. 5 hitter Chris Widner lofted a fly ball that carried, with some help from the wind, over the left-field wall for a three-run homer. 4-0 TAMU-CC after the first. The Islanders, who are no slouches at 9-2, have come to play – centerfielder Jon Kourie made a ridiculous diving catch on a smashed line drive from Alex Silversmith in the second inning.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, FAU starter Obradovich settled down in the second inning, going to a big breaking ball to complement his sinking fastball to strike out the side on 14 pitches. Remember, in the first game today, Nebraska took a 4-0 lead in the first inning but came out on the short end of a 9-5 score.
