Rice: Welcome to the launching pad

By Jonathan Yardley - February 25, 2007

No, Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium is not back in business. But with the wind blowing straight out at Reckling Park today, we've already had three home runs in the first four innings today between Nebraska and Florida Atlantic.

Florida Atlantic just tied the game 6-6 in the fourth inning, but both pitchers - Johnny Dorn for Nebraska and Brandon Cooney for FAU - have shown some wildness and an obvious tendency to surrender the long ball. Owl first baseman Robbie Widlansky has gone deep twice, including one at least halfway up the scoreboard in right field - as one press box denizen put it, "off the reservation!" The Cornhuskers have been racking up the extra-base hits, with Jake Opitz and Andrew Brown doubling in the third and Ryan Wehrle going yard in the fourth inning.

Errors have also played a major factor, with four combined errors leading to four unearned runs. Cooney made an errant pickoff throw in the first inning that led to a run, and FAU second baseman Daniel Bomback bobbled a grounder in the fourth inning, immediately preceding Wehrle's homer. On the other side, Andy Gerch dropped a fly ball that would have ended the fourth, allowing FAU to tie the game. We should be in for a lot of runs once again on a gorgeous afternoon in H-town.
