Rice-TxSt: Business as Usual for the Owls

By Glenn Tanner - February 06, 2007

In San Marcos, top-ranked Rice leads Texas State 2-0 after three and a half innings.

Rice plated a run in the second when Tyler Henley delivered a two-out single. They tacked on another run thanks to Jordan Dotson’s run-scoring double over the third base bag.

Rice used five pitchers in their opener, none going longer than three innings. The Owls will probably do the same tonight and started sophomore Matt Langwell, who redshirted last year after playing 2005 at Sam Houston State. Langwell has completed his three innings, doing very solid work. Langwell showed a nasty slider and a popping fastball, allowed no hits, and struck out five. Looks like Rice has another solid arm. Scott Lonergan has just come on to start the 4th.

The defensive play of the night so far came from Rice catcher Adam Zornes on a caught stealing. Zornes smoothly tossed a bead that found shortstop Brian Friday’s glove, which was positioned about a foot off the ground just to the first-base side of second. A split second later, the runner slid into the glove and tagged himself out.

Good crowd here in San Marcos to see the top-ranked team in the country visit. The official capacity of the stadium is listed at 1800. The stands are pretty full, and there is a good crowd down the third-base line, sitting on the berm and standing by the fence. And people are still trickling in.

Internet capability here is not exactly reliable – I’m picking up wireless from… well, from I don’t know where, so updates may be very sporadic.
