Some Random Thoughts After Six Innings

By Adam Aizer - February 10, 2007

Three innings to play and a three-run hole for UCLA. A win tonight guarantees a series victory for Miami. Blake Tekotte's two out single in the bottom of the sixth scored Dennis Raben and made it 6-3 Hurricanes. Sadly, my boy Jason Novak gave up his first run of the season in 7.2 innings pitched. Not too shabby.

Novak did keep the Bruins within striking distance by getting Jemile Weeks to fly out and strand two runners.

Alex Koronis pitched a scoreless sixth and now works here in the seventh for Miami.

A few observations...

- Miami and UCLA played three good, competitive, fun games last season in Southern Cal. Miami and UCLA played a great one last night and so far a good one tonight here in Southern Fla. I hope Miami and UCLA play a lot more games in the future. It seems like Canes Coach Jim Morris has a great deal of respect for Bruins Coach John Savage. I asked him about the UCLA program before the game, and Morris said, "They're only gonna get better." He also added, "I think Coach Savage is outstanding."

- Both teams have to be a bit scared about starting pitching depth. Yes I know, it's early. But once you get to Omaha, it's starting pitching that makes the difference. The Canes have Maine. The Bruins have Brummett. After that, there are question marks. Danny Gil pitched okay tonight, but he can be great and he needs to be great. UCLA is still trying to figure out its rotation.

- Miami finally seems to be playing its brand of baseball. The Canes are bunting for hits, moving runners station to station, and basically playing good small ball and adding timely hitting to the equation to put runs on the board.

Top of the seventh, UM leads 6-3, but the Bruins have the leadoff man on second base. Alden Carrithers is up, and he's already knocked in one man today with an RBI double.

And he just did it again. 6-4 Miami. Still nobody out. Heart of the order. I'll check back in the eighth. Miami's going to the bullpen.
