Toreros Chill Texas

By Glenn Tanner - February 02, 2007

San Diego got a great start from ace Brian Matusz and lots of hitting to beat Texas 6-5.

Kevin Hansen, Logan Gelbrich, and Justin Snyder each had three hits for the Toreros, who pounded Texas pitching for 15 hits on the day. Matusz pitched 5.2 innings and struck out eight to earn the win.

Texas rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it exciting, but with the tying run on base, Torero reliever Matt Couch struck out Chance Wheeless on three pitches to end it. For the day, Texas left 12 runners on base.

The sun just went down and temps just dropped below 40, so I'm getting out of this icebox. Back tomorrow for the 1pm game!

Tomorrow’s pitching matchup is scheduled to be Josh Romanski for USD against Kyle Walker for Texas. Walker also started last year’s second game against the Toreros. Though he was roughed up in three-plus innings, he went on to have a terrific year out of the bullpen. Romanski pitched five innings against Cal Poly last week, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out seven.
