Nashville: Christiani getting by with a little help

By Chris Lee - March 10, 2007

Vandy's Nick Christiani has shut out Illinois-Chicago through four innings, but needed a little help from his teammates and coaches to do it.

On a 2-2 count, Christiani hit leadoff hitter Larry Gempp, Jr. with a pitch. Brett Schaeffer followed with a line shot to deep left, but Vandy's Jonathan White made a terrific diving grab running to his right to save a double just before the ball hit the ground.

Pitching coach Derek Johnson obviously didn't like something he saw, and went to the mount for a lengthy discussion with Christiani. The next pitch the right-hander threw went for a strike, and two pitches later, he got a ground ball right to third baseman Pedro Alvarez, who started a nice 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, UIC's Steve Crnkovich is perfect after four innings, so we're still scoreless in Nashville.
