Vandy's Nick Christiani, after getting a strikeout to start the eighth, just gave up singles to the No. 8 and 9 hitters David Cales and Erik Whinery. That prompted a visit from coach Tim Corbin, and a call to the bullpen for senior lefty setup man Steve Shao, who has been money in the clutch over the course of his career in these situations.

Two on, one out for UIC in the top of the eighth, Vandy still up 1-0.
