OSU-A&M: Aggie Celebration

By Glenn Tanner - March 02, 2007

What better way to celebrate Texas Independence Day than by beating the defending national champs?

Texas A&M did just that, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead and cruising to a 5-2 victory over Oregon State.

Kyle Nicholson was nearly unhittable in relief for A&M. Nicholson, who was Big XII Pitcher of the Week last week, faced 11 batters in the game and recorded 11 outs.

Shortstop Brandon Hicks led the Aggie offense. Hicks got on base three times and scored every time. He also stole third and home in the sixth inning. Catcher Craig Stinson helped out Hicks by driving him home twice with singles.

Big win for the Aggies. Last year's team started 12-1 against an embarrassingly weak schedule, but slumped horribly against real competition, limping to a final record of 25-30 and a last-place finish in the Big XII. This year's team also entered this game with a 12-1 record against a pretty cushy schedule. But tonight's game was definitely against real competition, and the Aggies pulled off a solid, businesslike win. They'll have games Saturday and Sunday against New Mexico and St. Louis before testing themselves Monday against the Beavers again.
