Oxford: Game two wrap

By Chris Kieffer - March 10, 2007

UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford said that when Cody Overbeck hit the ball that ended Saturday's game, he wasn't sure he'd be able to turn a double play.
He credited second baseman Alden Carrithers and pitcher Brandt Rustich for the final play of UCLA's 7-6 win Saturday.

"When it was first hit, I was just hoping for a force at second and then Alden at second base had one of the quicker exchanges I’ve ever seen and we got him," Crawford said. "It was perfect.(UCLA closer Brant) Rustich threw a perfecty pitch."

UCLA was able to jump on top early with three runs in the second and three in the third after being shut out on Friday.
Leading the way was first baseman Casey Hearther, who wnet 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Catcher Ryan Babineau went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Said UCLA coach John Savage on his team's offense:
"We’ve had a few games like that. We’ve really struggled offensively and it has just been a grind without Jermaine Curtis, our starting thrid baseman. He hasn’t played all year (academically ineligible), and we’ve had some injuries. Just nice to come back after a dismal perfromance last night to come back and battle them. (Ole Miss starter Lance) Lynn is very good as well and we handled him and we fought him. That was what we needed to do."

Reliever Brendan Laffery (2-0) took the win allowing no runs or hits in 0.1 innings. Rustich then allowed two hits and no runs in three innings to earn his fourth save.
Tim Murphy, an outfielder who had pitched just 1.2 innings on the season, went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking none.

Ole Miss' Justin Henry was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Jordan Henry was 2-for-5.
Logan Power was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Zack Cozart hit a two-run home run, his second long ball in as many days.
Said Power:
"Yeah it is a tough loss for anybody especially after fighting back like we did and battling back like we did. You just have to give them the credit. They made the pitches when they needed to and they scored the run when they needed to and they were good today. We just couldn’t get it done."

Rubber match is Sunday at noon CST.
Ole Miss will start sophomore left-hander Brett Bukvich (2-1, 2.38 ERA) against freshman left-hander Gavin Brooks (2-0,1.80).
