Oxford: Throw it in the dirt
By Chris Kieffer - March 10, 2007
It began about five years ago and has beomce a popular cheer here in Oxford.
When Ole Miss is batting, one fan yells "Throw it in the dirt." And everyone else cheers in unison, "dirt."
The Rebel fans broke the cheer out in the bottom of the fifth Saturday.
It worked a bit, as UCLA's Tim Murphy threw a pickoff attempt at first into the dirt, allowing Justin Henry to advance to third base.
Ole Miss also got two home runs, a solo shot by Justin Henry and a two-run blow by Zack Cozart (his second in as many days) to cut UCLA's lead to 6-4.
The "Throw it in the dirt" cheer has spread in popularity through the years. I even heard the Ole Miss cheerleaders use it when LSU was shooting free throws at the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament.
Story too is that when Ole Miss was at UCLA last season, the Ole Miss fans began cheering it. One young UCLA fan picked up on that and began counter-cheering "Throw it in the mit."
Jesse Simpson now pitching for Ole Miss replacing Lance Lynn.
final line for Lynn... 5.0n nnings, 6 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, three walks, three Ks.
6-4 UCLA heading into the bottom of the sixth.
