FSU: Tar Heels take it 10-6

By Michael McGuffee - April 22, 2007

Not even FSU's Danny Rosen, who saved both of the Seminoles' first two wins in the series, could stop the Tar Heels from extending their lead yet again. North Carolina scored two more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach and take a 10-6 win in the final game of the series.

Florida State needed something big in the ninth, but managed only a single from Mark Gildea and a Tony Thomas Jr. walk before the Tar Heels could seal the win.

The difference for Carolina was several multi-hit performances from a lineup that had for the most part been held in check for the first two games of the series. Center fielder Seth Williams finished 4-for-6 and was one of four Tar Heels with three or more hits on the day. No one from UNC had more than one hit in either of the team's first two matchups in Tallahassee.

Everyone in UNC's lineup got at least one hit on the day, while only two Seminole batters, missed out on the slug-fest that was game three.

UNC pitcher Luke Putkonen improved to 6-1 on the season, while FSU's Ryan Strauss was handed his first loss of the season, now 8-1, after lasting . Tim Federowicz picked up his second save of the year for the Tar Heels.

For the second straight game the Seminoles were forced to dig deep in the bullpen as six pitchers shared the mound and the starter struggled.

North Carolina's 20 hits shattered Florida State season-high allowed, which stood at 13 coming into today's contest, and was the most hits given up by FSU pitchers since May 8, 2004 against Virginia. The game was also the Seminoles' longest of the season, lasting 3 hours and 47 minutes.

Center fielder Mark Gildea led the 'Noles from the plate, batting 3-for-4, while first baseman Brandon Reichert led the Tribe with two RBI.

The loss was only the Seminoles' second at home this season, and the first home loss to UNC since 2003.
