By Michael McGuffee - April 20, 2007
UNC freshman Dustin Ackley homered to right field to cut the deficit to two, but Florida State's Danny Rosen helped close out the inning as FSU goes on to earn a 4-2 victory in game one of the series. The Seminoles have now recorded double digits in the hit column for 11 straight games.
Bryan Henry gets the win for the 'Noles improving to a career-high 10 wins for the season, while UNC's Robert Woodard picked up his first loss. The matchup looked to be a pitching battle early but the lineups got the best of the mound as the game went on.
Florida State continues to see contributions throughout the lineup as Mark Gildea finished 3-for-4 on the night , including three of the team's four RBIs, batting eighth. Eight members of tonight's Seminole lineup have batting percentages of .350 or better on the season, as compared to UNC's four.
Third baseman Jason Stidham was the other source behind FSU's production, hitting 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
No player had more than one hit for the Tar Heels in game one, as Henry's overall performance was dominant. The senior threw 120 pitches over eight innings while giving up just four hits and one run.
A loyal fan base, including the 4,061 in attendance for tonight's game, has played a role in the Seminoles' success all season. Florida State is now 31-1 at home, but just 5-4 on the road, in 2007.
The team's will return to Dick Howser Stadium tomorrow for game two of the series which is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
Florida State head coach Mike Martin will be honored before the game with the ABCA Hall of Fame trophy. Martin has 1,168 career wins in his coaching tenure at FSU and has led the Tribe to 20 50-win seasons and 12 College World Series.
