Houston: Bottom of Cougar lineup delivers
By Amber Obermeyer - April 15, 2007
After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the second, Joe Savery started nibbling against the bottom of the Cougars' lineup, allowing singles to Zak Presley and Bryan Pounds before walking Chris Wallace on a full count. Ryan Lormand followed by doing exactly what you would expect from a leadoff hitter: he worked a 3-1 count and then took what Savery gave him, punching the next pitch into short right-center to score two and give Houston a 2-1 lead.
I have to question Savery's pitch selection, though, throwing hardly any fastballs (and he hits the low 90s consistently) against No. 9 hitter Wallace especially.
I think the Cougars have more hits to the opposite field this weekend than the Owls have all year. I exaggerate...but not by much.
The Sunday weather has brought out the best crowd of the weekend here at Cougar Field; I would estimate that 1,100 or so are in attendance today. Last night's annouced figure of 1800something was about twice the actual attendance (in my estimation, at least), down from a multiple of three for Friday's game that was played partly in the rain. The announced Friday and Saturday figures constituted the two biggest crowds of the season for the Cougars, and I suspect today's number will top both of those.
I don't mean to pick on Houston, though. The attendance figures at Rice, and I suspect any other university, are similarly inflated, especially in bad weather, when a lot of season-ticket holders opt to stay home.
