Houston: Cougars take game one

By Amber Obermeyer - April 13, 2007

For the second consecutive year, Houston has taken the first of the three-game Conference USA series against Rice.

It's a familiar story for Rice: a few hard-hit outs, but the bottom line is that the Owls have gotten far too little production out of guys with a lot of experience. Juniors Brian Friday, Tyler Henley, Joe Savery, and Jordan Dodson combined to go just 2 for 15 against Aaron Brown, who entered the game with a middling 4.62 earned run average.

Credit Houston, though--Brown pitched well and Kingsbury changed the game with his excellent at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars just seemed...hungrier than the Owls did.

But Rice has done a good job of bouncing back from losses this year, so perhaps the Owl bats will be more impressive tomorrow. They likely will need to be at least somewhat more productive, as Rice has not gotten consistent starting pitching outside of Ryan Berry (Fridays) and Joe Savery (Sundays) this year. Last time I checked Wayne Graham had not even announced a Saturday starter.

Looking forward to game two tomorrow night!
