Houston: Flores unlucky, out of game
By Amber Obermeyer - April 15, 2007
Rayner Noble had a veeeeeery quick hook with Luis Flores, pulling him after he allowed two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Granted, Flores has not pitched much this season, but he had only thrown 44 pitches today, and he was very unlucky this inning in that he got absolutely no help from his defense. Jess Buenger's double went just over the outstretched glove of Houston first baseman Josh Stirneman, who appeared to mis-time his jump, and Stirneman made no effort to stop Diego Seastrunk's double, which was chopped down the first-base line. Neither was scored an error--rightfully so--but a more agile first baseman probably would have made both plays.
Flores didn't get any help from reliever Shea Hancock, either, as Hancock allowed a single and a sacrifice fly to score Seastrunk. And Hancock later got a taste of the same medicine, as Cougar third baseman Dustin Kingsbury (the most impressive hitter of the series if you ask me) lost Tyler Henley's fly ball in the sun (which is VERY bright today), which plated Jordan Dodson and gave the Owls a 5-2 lead.
And, to be fair to Stirneman, he made a nice play to get Houston out of the inning, ranging to his right and flipping to Hancock to edge Jared Gayhart at first.
