Houston: Kingsbury puts Cougars ahead
By Amber Obermeyer - April 13, 2007
With a runner on second and two outs, Rice coach Wayne Graham elected to walk Houston's Jimmy Cesario in favor of pitching to cleanup hitter Dustin Kingsbury.
Kingsbury made Graham and the Owls pay for the insult, working a full count before crushing an opposite-field double down the right-field line. It was by far the best at bat of the game by a player from either team--both pitchers have thrown well, but they certainly have been helped by hitters hacking early in counts and chasing some bad pitches.
A Josh Stirneman single scored Kingsbury from second to give the Cougars' their current 4-1 lead. Both teams have five hits, but Houston has gotten the big hits with runners in scoring position.
Despite struggling in the sixth, Ryan Berry has thrown just 85 pitches, compared to Aaron Brown, who is back out to start the seventh despite having thrown 98 pitches so far.
In other news, I probably erred in calling this a "crosstown" rivalry earlier. These schools are only about five miles apart, and they are located on the same (southwest) quadrant of the city. TCU-SMU, it ain't.
