Houston: Tacker's first start a success
By Amber Obermeyer - April 14, 2007
With Ryne Tacker still building arm strength after spending the first three months of the season in the bullpen, Rice coach Wayne Graham inserted lefty Bobby Bramhall into the game to start the seventh inning.
Tacker threw just 87 pitches in six innings (including 32 in the last three), allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out nine. I think it's safe to say that Tacker will be getting another Saturday start for the Owls.
Meanwhile, the Rice offense added another three runs in the sixth to make the score 9-0. Conference USA's only mercy rule is for Sunday games, although that seems inappropriate given that this game will end less than 13 hours before tomorrow's will begin.
I suspect Bramhall won't pitch for more than an inning, as Graham tries to keep everybody fresh for the decisive game for tomorrow...and I'm sure Tuesday's game against the University of Texas is in the back of Wayne Graham's mind as well (no matter how much he says otherwise).
