LEXINGTON: Controversy
By Chris Lee - April 13, 2007
Vandy's Stephen Shao has done a good job of pitching here in the eighth with a man on second and no outs. He struck out Jason Kipnis looking, then got a ground ball from Ryan Wilkes, and Alex Feinberg's throw from second beat him by a step.
With sub Kurt Lipton at first, UK coach John Cohen gambled and sent pitch-runner Brock Wright all the way home on the play. Lipton immediately spotted Wright, and threw home but a little to the third base side and low. It appeared that Vandy's Shea Robin might have gotten the tag in time (actually, the replays were inconclusive, but the throw did beat him) and home plate umpire Nelson Graham made no hesitation in calling Wright safe.
An unhappy Vandy coach Tim Corbin argued the play for a minute or two, but to no avail. So, we've got a tie game as Shao got Antone de Jesus to line to right to end the inning.
8-8, we go to the ninth with Brock Baber on the hill against Vandy's 2-4 hitters.
