NASHVILLE: Vandy sweeps

By Chris Lee - April 22, 2007

Nothing is sweeter for Vanderbilt fans than to sweep in-state rival Tennessee, and that's what just happened.

Vandy's Pedro Alvarez laid off a change-up outside for a walk on a 3-2 pitch, and Ryan Flaherty, perhaps the team's best bunter, placed one perfectly between the pitcher, second baseman and first baseman for an infield hit.

UT relieved Jeff Lockwood, who threw a terrific 5 1/3 innings in relief himself, with Aaron Everett.

Shea Robin couldn't get a bunt down on the first at-bat, and eventually struck out for out one.

Ryan Davis pinch-hit for Matt Meingasner as the Vols played the lefty Davis not to pull and substituted Daniel Beasley, who has a better arm, for Jarred Frazier in left. Davis indeed pulled, hitting a ball a few feet inside the right-field line, and the Commodores stay atop the standings in the SEC East by a pair of games over Florida.

Weathers won or saved every game this weekend for the Commodores, and is insuring his status as a first-rounder this June.
