Oxford: Celebrating 4/20!
By Glenn Tanner - April 20, 2007
I'm celebrating in style tonight with my drug of choice, college baseball, and this matchup isn't schwag, it's chronic!
I'm in Oxford, Mississippi for tonight's game between SEC heavyweights South Carolina and Ole Miss, with big timers Harris Honeycutt and Will Kline squaring off.
The Gamecocks (30-8, 9-6 in the SEC) enter the game ranked #4 in the nation with the nation's top RPI rating. They are loaded up and down the lineup (leading the SEC in ERA and homers). Honeycutt is coming off something he's not used to, though -- losing. His career record is 15-1, with that blemish coming last week in a wildly uncharacteristic 16-1 loss last Friday to Auburn. Honeycutt came into that game with an ERA below 1.5, but was bashed for eight runs in four innings.
The Gamecock offense has been so powerful, I can't even pick one guy to feature. 3B James Darnell leads the team in batting average (.359), on-base average (.473), slugging (.710), homers (13), and RBI (43). The sophomore's performance has come waaaaaaay off the radar, as he batted only .239 last season. 1B Justin Smoak has been on the radar since he set foot on campus, and he hasn't disappointed. He was a Freshman All-America last season with 17 bombs and 63 ribbies, and he's right with Darnell in homers and RBI (12, 43) this season and is currently riding a 19-game hitting streak. Junior Travis Jones is the third threat, and maybe the hottest -- he has hit eight home runs in the last eight games.
South Carolina stats
Ole Miss got hot about this time last season and eventually won the SEC conference tournament and advanced to the Supers. At 25-14 and 8-7 coming in, they're actually ahead of last year's pace, and are looking to fire up with seven consecutive home games starting tonight.
Kline (4-1, 2.92) ERA gets the start tonight. Kline has struggled a bit in his last two starts, allowing 19 hits in 12.2 innings, but managed to spread those hits around enough to allow only six earned runs and escape with two no-decisions.
Offensively, SS Zack Cozart was a preseason All-American who started the season slowly, but a .459 batting average in SEC play has raised his season numbers to .342. The Henry brothers, Justin (.417) and Jordan (.363), can also rake.
Ole Miss stats
Should be a great one! Back later with updates.
