Oxford: Colonel Reb is smiiiiiiiiiiiiling...

Ole Miss capitalized on clutch hitting and South Carolina miscues to win the series opener, 8-5.

Seven of the Ole Miss runs scored with two outs, and four of the runs were officially unearned. South Carolina was charged with three errors, but also failed to make several plays a team of their caliber should make, one of which directly contributed to another run.

The Gamecocks did make it interesting in the ninth. Closer Cody Satterwhite walked two to bring the tying run to the plate with one out, but got a fly ball and grounder to end it.

The top of the order did their job for the Rebels. The Henry brothers combined to score four runs, and Cody Overbeck had three hits and three ribbies. The bottom of the order helped out, too, as 8-9 hitters Evan Button and Brett Basham combined for four hits, three runs, and two RBI.

Will Kline was good, but not dominating. He was eventually charged with five runs after leaving with a man on and none out in the eight. He did only allow only five hits and struck out eight, and is now 5-1 on the season.

Satterwhite worked two hitless innings to earn his second save.

Harris Honeycutt lost his second start in a row to drop to 15-2 in his career and 7-2 this season. Honeycutt allowed seven hits and six runs in six innings, but only two of the runs were earned.

5,328 in attendance tonight at Swayze, one of my new favorite college ballparks.
