Oxford: I'm in love
By Glenn Tanner - April 20, 2007
After two and a half innings in Oxford, Will Kline is cruising and Ole Miss leads 2-0. Nine up and nine down for the Gamecocks, five on K's.
And I am in love with Swayze Field.
Kline got the game off to a good start with a 1-2-3 first including two strikeouts, then the offense got him a lead.
After the Henry brothers both flew out, Zach Cozart hit a smash down the line that the baseman was only able to knock down. Cozart then stole second and scored when Cody Overbeck lined an RBI single to center.
The second inning was nearly the same thing, as Kline again sat down the Gamecocks in order, then his teammates added a run. This run came on Evan Button's two-out bomb to left, only the second homer allowed by Harris Honeycutt this season.
If you're wondering why the Texas guy is doing an SEC game, it's because I'm expanding my horizons with an SEC weekend. I've always wanted to see Dudy Noble and Plainsman Park, so I'm hitting those tomorrow and Sunday. But they'll have to exceed my expectations to be better than Swayze Field. I loooooooooove this place.
I had seen it on TV a couple of times, but got really intrigued by the huge, hanging-on-every-pitch crowds that I saw in the 2005 regionals.
The grandstand seats only 3500, but if that fills up, Ole Miss is willing to let you sit practically anywhere else. They have a 'grassy knoll' down the third base line, and huge terraced seating in the outfield. Eight rows of terraced concrete run from the left field foul pole to nearly straightaway center. This section is general admission seating, and also offers BBQ grills and picnic tables. In right field is a similar but smaller section for student seating, and its more than packed tonight, as students are piled on the hill behind it.
The topper to all this is that the stadium is sunk down into a valley, surrounded by trees and buildings. Pictures don't do it justice. Just absolutely freakin' beautiful.
