Oxford: Rebels take series

By Chris Kieffer - April 28, 2007

Ole Miss wins game two 5-1. The Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead but the real turning point came in the top of the fifth when Ole Miss pitcher Lance Lynn got out of a bases loaded no-out jam.

Lynn got Jeffrey Rea to line into a double play to OM thrid baseman Cody Overbeck who then beat MSU base runner Joseph McCaskill to third base. Lynn who relies mostly on his fastball then got a couple of curveballs past Jet Butler for an inning-ending strikeout.
The Rebels then struck for three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Lynn allowed one earned run (a solo home run by MSU second baseman Jeffrey Rea) on six hits in eight innings. He struck out nine and walked none.
Cody Satterwhite pitched a prefect ninth.
Mississippi State starter Justin Pigott allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6.2 innings. He's now 2-2 in quality starts.
Ole Miss got to Pigott in the sixth, doing a better job of taking his offspeed pitches the other way.
Crowd was loud after the game. It was something being on the field and looking around at the large crowd all around me and hearing a "Hotty Toddy" cheer from all the way across in left field. Neat atmosphere. Crowd of 7,312 today a bit smaller than last night.
Apparently pretty hostile to Mississippi State too. MSU coach Ron Polk said the fans were rough on him, chanting this like "nursing home" when he was in the third-base coaching box.
Game three is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CST.
MSU freshman shortstop Brandon Turner (the SEC batting leader) is out for about a week with a right groin/ left hamstring injury. MSU RF Jeff Flagg is day to day with back spasms.
MSU senior right-hander Josh Johnson will oppose OM freshman left-hander Nathan Baker.
