LSU-MSU: LSU downs The Dude
By Glenn Tanner - April 21, 2007
LSU plated a run in the ninth with a two-out rally, then foiled LSU's attempted two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 6-5 win.
Great weather, great baseball, great crowd. Just a great day at The Dude!
LSU mounted an improbable winning rally in the ninth. Tied 5-5 with two outs, Chris Jackson got in an 0-2 hole and fouled off the next two pitches before squibbing an infield single. Michael Hollander followed by also getting in an 0-2 hole, but hammered the next pitch down the right-field line. Andy Rice valiantly laid out for the ball, but it eluded him, and Jackson scored all the way from first to give the Tigers the lead.
LSU's nine hits were concentrated among three players: Hollander had two doubles, a homer and two RBI, Jason Lewis went 3-for-3, and Nicholas Pontiff had a dinger, a double, and three ribbies.
LSU's starting pitching has been better than its relief for most of the season, but not today, as the bullpen produced four shutout innings. TJ Forrest threw three innings of one-hit relief to earn the W, and Jared Bradford pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.
Mississippi State had 11 hits, three of which came off Brandon Turner's bat, which also produced three RBI.
With the win, LSU improves to 7-9 in conference, while MSU drops to 9-6 and loses a game in the standings to division-leading Arkansas.
I'll be in Auburn tomorrow. See you then...
