Tech-UT: Preview

By Glenn Tanner - April 13, 2007

Texas Tech is in Austin for a weekend with Big XII leader Texas.

Tech brings a 22-13 record (5-6 in conference) and a #49 RPI ranking into today's game, and that's not bad considering... Tech lost perhaps the conference's best pitcher, Miles Morgan, to a season-ending injury before the season and have struggled along to a conference-worst 5.14 team ERA. The staff has been held afloat by tonight's starter, AJ Ramos. Generously listed at 5'10", Ramos has been big on the mound, with a 7-1 record and a 3.72 ERA (very good for Tech's Dan Law Field) in 58 innings.

Offensively, the Red Raiders are led by outfielder Roger Kieschnick. Kieschnick came out of nowhere to be the top freshman in the conference last season. Despite batting only .284 and .319 his last two seasons in high school. Kieschnick hit .359 in 2006 and is at .342 this year with 32 extra-base hits.

Tech stats

Texas (28-10, 9-3 in conference, #7 RPI) is led by CSTV Player of the Year front-runner Kyle Russell. Russell has already tied the UT single-season home run record with 20 and leads the nation with a .915 slugging percentage. An unrelated Russell will be on the mound. James Russell (7-2, 3.20 ERA in 64.2 innings) has emerged as a Friday night ace for the Longhorns.

Texas stats

All of the rain in the state looks to be staying north of us. We have partly cloudy skies with humid 82 degree temps. Let's play ball! Back in a few innings with updates.
