ACC: Pack pen can't protect

By Glenn Tanner - May 26, 2007

NC State starter Jimmy Gillheeney didn't pitch well, but he left with a lead after five.

That lead is gone now, as the Pack needed three relievers to get through the sixth inning.

After six, Georgia Tech leads 7-6.

State brought Andrew Taylor out to start the sixth, but he walked Wally Crancer to lead off. After an out, Patrick Long delivered his third hit of the day, and Taylor's day was done. On came Kyle Rutter, but Jason Haniger bounced one up the middle to load the bases.

NC State had two straight chances to get out of the inning on a double play ball, but couldn't turn either. Third baseman Ramon Corona tried to backhand a hard smash and booted it for a game-tying error. Then Jason Garofalo beat out the relay throw on a 6-4 fielder's choice to give Tech the 7-6 lead.

Pack closer Eryk McConnell came out of the bullpen to the final out of the inning.

Gilhenney's final line: 5 innings, 6 hits, 5 earned, 1 walk, 4 K's
