Nate McDonald, who has accounted for all three Gardner-Webb hits, had a one-out single before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Rizzuto then hit a groundball to Mercer third baseman Steven Karwatt, who sailed a throw over the first baseman's head to the fence, allowing MacDonald to score.
It looks like Mercer's bats are going to have to overcome their erroneous defense to give the second-seeded Bears a chance to stay out of the loser's bracket.
