A-Sun: Ball Game
By Bryan App - May 23, 2007
Mercer reliever Cory Gearrin hit one batter but retired the other three in the ninth, and the Bears won the opening game of the Atlantic Sun tournament 5-4.
Not to be redundant, but the Bears really can turn it on when necessary. They looked calm and collected even while struggling defensively and on the mound in the first three innings and responding offensively every time Gardner-Webb plated a run.
The squeeze play that scored the winning run in the eighth stands out initially, but an RBI single by Steven Karwatt (2-for-4) during a two-run sixth was just as big.
If the Bears don't commit three errors and walk eight batters, this one isn't even close. They could be a team to be reckoned with in the A-Sun.
Game 2, which is officially listed as Game 3, will feature third-seeded Belmont and fourth-seeded Jacksonville. First pitch is set for 3:10 p.m.
