A-Sun: Bruins Reaction

By Bryan App - May 25, 2007

Here are some comments from Belmont Coach Dave Jarvis after the Bruins defeated top-seeded Stetson 18-5 to advance to the A-Sun Tournament championship game:

ON WHERE THIS WIN RANKS IN THE COURSE OF THE SEASON:

"We haven't done this to a quality team such as Stetson. To be quite honest -- and I would call it perfect timing -- this is our best performance against a team of this caliber. It was our best performance, and it couldn't have come at a better time."

ON WHETHER BELMONT NEEDED TO WIN THE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT IN ORDER TO GET AN NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH:

"In my mind, no doubt. With our record and some of the midweek loses we've suffered this year, I felt like we had to win the [A-Sun] Tournament. I feel like Stetson deserves to get an at-large bid. A committee will decide that, but there's no reason why they shouldn't."

ON HIS TEAM'S EXPLOSIVE OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE, TOTALING NINE RUNS IN THE FIRST TWO INNINGS:

"We have some offensive firepower and a pretty good nucleus of experience in our lineup, so we're capable of doing that. I've seen that through the course of our season, so it didn't surprise me. Our kids were just really focused, and we probably had the right amount of adrenaline flowing. And in all fairness, Stetson is a little farther down the line in their pitching in this game. If you have their No. 1 or No. 2 guy starting, it's a whole different ball game and a different atmosphere."

ON HOW THE BRUINS' ADVANTAGE OF BEING UNDEFEATED IN TOURNAMENT PLAY AND JACKSONVILLE HAVING TO DEFEAT THEM TWICE IN ORDER TO TAKE THE A-SUN TITLE:

"Baseball's one of those games where you don't count your eggs. It's just the nature of the game, but would I rather be where we are than where they are? Absolutely. I'd rather have the advantage we have with no losses. We'll go out there with that mindset, focusing on the process and let the outcomes take care of themselves."
