Atlantic Sun: Rise and Shine

By Bryan App - May 23, 2007

Judging by the scant crowd at Melching Field for the A-Sun Tournament opener between second-seeded Mercer and fifth-seeded Gardener-Webb, not too many are thrilled about baseball at 11 a.m. And it seems like Mercer starter Brantley New had a problem wiping the sleep from his eyes as well.

Eight of New's first nine pitches were balls, as the senior right-hander walked the leadoff hitter and hit the following batter.

New fell behind 3-0 to No. 3 batter Daniel Cooke before recovering with a strikeout. And after clean-up hitter Nate MacDonald singled to load the bases, New got another strikeout and a groundout to escape the inning.
