Big 12: Texas holds on to beat Nebraska 5-4.

By Eric Sorenson - May 26, 2007

NU fought and scratched enough to make this a white-knuckler, but the Longhorns Randy Boone was able to make enough good pitches and get enough outs to pull out the one-run win. Austin Wood pitched 3.2 innings of 1-hit, zero-run ball to improve his record to 8-1. Boone's save was his 13th of the year.

A couple of interesting comments in the post-game.

Mike Anderson, Nebraska coach, when asked about making the post-season:
Well, we're definitely a Regional team. We'll probably go in as a 2-or-3 seed and I suspect we'll do well. We're very pleased with the effort of our kids today, so we expect this will carry over to next week. Depending on where we get placed, we think we'll do very well.

When asked if there were some kind of good feeling about helping good friend Rob Childress' Texas A&M team now play in the title game with today's loss:
Ummm... yeah sure (he said with a smirk). No, the answer is no. He's the coach at Texas A&M. We wanted to play in that game.

Augie Garrido, Texas coach, when asked about today's game:
It was a good competitive game. A good college game. Sometimes in these tournaments you see guys just going through the motions and dragging around... looking like their dog just died or something. But this was a good game with a lot of excitement and effort.

when asked about getting the extra day to rest instead of playing tomorrow:
It's always good to get an extra days rest at this time of year, sure. But you play to win championships and we don't ever want to walk away from a championship.

When asked if it felt good to help out Texas A&M:
(long pause)... yes. It's in the manual to do so. (laughs)

When asked what the difference will be in playing their regional in Round Rock instead of at Disch-Falk Field:
Well Round Rock is good for a power hitting team. A lot of balls that are hit at home are going to get out of the park at Round Rock. So that will be to our advantage. Another big difference is that the field itself will be about 20-to-25 degrees cooler and that's the main difference.

The battle of 0-2 teams is going to tip off here soon. Missouri vs. Oklahoma State. Considering it's now 5:45 and this game was scheduled for a 4:30 start, let's just hope for a quick game.
