Big East: Cats Go Quietly
By Adam Caparell - May 24, 2007
Rutgers wrapped up an 11-0 win over Villanova, dispatching the Wildcats from the Big East Tournament behind Todd Frazier, who tortured Nova's pitchers to the tune of three doubles and a home run. The only blemish for Frazier, who clearly showed he was the best player on the field, came on the WIldcats ninth hit of the game that he may have had a chance to make a play on, but a hard hit grounder in the hole glanced off his glove and into left field. It certainly didn't take away from what he did at the plate where he absolutely just punished Nova's pitchers.
Despite putting 11 hits on the board, Villanova couldn't get any runs across and never really threatened to do so until the ninth when they loaded the bases - even with the small army of pinch hitters the Wildcats brought up to the plate.Rutgers now will moves on to play another day: 11 17 1 Rutgers, 0 11 1 Villanova.
Gianni got the win (5-4) for Rutgers as he went the distance, striking out six, throwing 128 pitches. Hoffman (4-8) took the loss.
UConn and St. John's - Game 2 on the day's schedule - is now scheduled to get underway at approximately 7:44 after the day's first one slogged it's way to an uneventful end. St. John's George Brown (6-2, 2.90) opposes UConn's Dusty Odenbach (2-5, 4.63).
