Big East: Huskies Walk Off
By Adam Caparell - May 24, 2007
The third home run of the season for Matt Untiet was by far his best - and most important - as the Huskies won their back and forth affair against St. John's in the bottom of the ninth, beating the Red Storm's Colin Lynch in the process.
Untiet, with two out and no one on, belted one to left center field that just cleared the 20 foot-high fence to send UConn into the Big East Tournament semifinals. It sent the Huskies dugout into pandimonium and the St. John's bench into a state of disbelief. Untiet was swarmed when he got to home plate and it was complete jubilation.
Untiet didn't even think the ball was out and he didn't see the ball go over the fence. He only realized he had won the game after seeing the second baseman's reaction.
The Red Storm were eliminated from the Big East Tournament and now may have to sweat out their NCAA tournament hopes when the selections are announced Monday.
Matt Karl got the win for the Huskies and Lynch took the loss.
7 14 0 St. John's, 8 13 1 UConn as the Huskies, the No. 8 seed, upset the No. 1 seeded Red Storm. This marked the first time UConn had beaten St. John's in Big East Tournament play.
The Big East semifinals begin Friday at 10 with Rutgers and Louisville squaring off and then UConn and South Florida at 1.
Things are breaking down fast at Keyspan Park. The outfield lights are out and the stadium is quickly emptying as Day 3 of the Big East Tournament has come to a close.
