Big East: Keyspan A Sight

By Adam Caparell - May 24, 2007

If you've never been to Keyspan Park to see a baseball game, you're missing out - big time.

There are few other settings that can compare to what the Mets' Single-A affiliate have built here a few years back on historic Coney Island. This former glamour spot has seen better days, but it still holds a place in the hearts of many.

Just over the right and center field fence, beyond the boardwalk, is the Atlantic Ocean and beaches that are packed once it really warms up in New York. Over the left field wall, about a quarter mile, sits some of the relics that Coney Island is really known for: the amusement park, the shady attractions and, of course, the original Nathan's - the hot dog mecca.

The lights that illuminate the field are circled with neon rings of different colors, paying homage the bright bulbs of Astroland where the age-old Cyclone - the wooden rollercoaster that's a must-ride for any coaster lover - sits dormant for the night. Coney Island doesn't really come alive for another few weeks and that's a big reason why the crowd isn't what you'd hope it'd be. But I can't imagine there being another venue the Big East can use that is as picturesque and appropriate for this tournament - especially when the weather's as beautiful as it's been for the past several days here in New York.
