Big East: Their Own Worst Enemy

By Elliot Olshansky - May 22, 2007

The Johnnies threatened in the bottom of the third, but came away empty-handed thanks to some bad, bad base-running.

Chris Joachim got his second hit of the day with Brian Kemp on first, but Kemp went a bit too far on the play and wound up trapped in a rundown. Then, with Sam DeLuca at the plate, Joachim was picked off at second. DeLuca's groundout did it for the inning, and we're tied at 1-1 in the fourth.

I just came back from watching the final game between Rutgers and UConn,

The good? Todd Frazier is the real deal he might have to be moved to 3b but this guy has alot of Ryan Zimmerman in him

UConn played the role of cinderella knocing off the Johnnies with a solo homer by Firstbaseman Matt UnTiet,

Entering the Championship game vs the Scarlet Knights I thought they were destinys favorite, however the game apperaed to be to big for Freshman Robert VAn Wort who struggled with the strike zone walking 3 in the first who eventually all scored.

Robert will be fine and a name to remember for the future but today he needed to be big and frankly wasnt.

THr fatal blow was a monster 2 run homer in the 8th by CAtcher Frank Meade, Twice this tournament Frank has blasted a game deciding blow,

His defense and ability to elimenate the oppositions running game have proven to be vital in helping Rutgers capture the championship.

Other game notes I would like to share,

Michael Biondi is a fan favorite and rightly so, this spark plug 2nd baseman is all about winning and reminds me of another champion Heart David Eckstein somebody is going to be glad they looked past his height when they grabbed him in the coming draft.

RF David Williams is a big strong Kid who is very scary at the bat,I dont know why he hasnt hit 20 homers this past season but he will one day in the bigs,Strong arm, good speed and a solid glove are going to carry this player far.

UCONN has a nice player in SS Dennis Donovan he didnt hit in the big game but displayed a strong arm good range should be drafted in the 6-10 rounds

Future name to watch Trent Delazzer for UCONN when this frosh entered the game all the scouts took out their guns he hit 92-94 and displayed excellent control, I didnt spot much of a breaking ball, but he is legit.

Other players that impressed me I thought LOuisville could have won the whole thing but
Logan Johnson's bat went silent. I like this Todd Walker clone and every time he came up I expected big things.

Boomer Whiting has alot of Lenny Dykstra in him,

Cris Dominguez is loaded with potential a legit 5 tool player "Ozzie Guillen would love this guy"

Isaiah Howes 6'2 210 can flat out hit.

I didnt see Zack Pitts but heard alot about him.

St JOhns has a couple of super steady players who I would take, C Brendan Monahan is a Mike Barrett double, 2nd sacker Sam Deluca/ Mike Loretta solid player contact hitter gamer,

Gil ZAyas reminds me of Doug Decinces, Scott BArnes re: Casey Fossum
Chris Joachim/Sott Rowand
Chris MAhoney/KEvin MAas remember him?

anyway all of these johnnies should get a taste of pro ball

USF BULLS feature ss Walter Diaz and my favorite DAnny Otero a cross between Tim Hudson and John Smoltz. THink this kid has a future?

THe best player not in the tournament clerly goes to Cincy lefty Dan Osterbrook only a soph this kid has a real nice future.

Apologies to DAvid Phelps from Notre DAme who I didnt see, like wise to Justin Jenkins, MIke LOree,

Honerable mention to Neal French Tony CAmpana from cincy who I did see and like alot, as well as USF 2b DExter Butler.
